Anna Kipervaser – The bodies of work I am currently developing were sparked by cultural issues I became intrigued by when traveling in the Middle East in 2007. Most of these paintings begin by my using a jigsaw to cut out the shaped wood panel I will need. Formal decisions are based on the appeal of limiting my paintings to one subject as my training connects with traditions of portraiture and iconography.
-
The focus of this work is to examine collective and individual identity. I am creating visually compelling images that hope to challenge preconceived notions about the Middle East and its people in unconventional ways.

Just had an email from my friend (and fellow flattened box enthusiast)
Kelvin Soh showing me the lovely work of
Eric Tillinghast. This from the
Centre for Contemporary Non-Objective Art – "Empires” is the latest group of works in colour by Eric Tillinghast. All of these paintings are made on small, unfolded cardboard boxes and packaging material. As different as each is from the next, they are all a means to the same end: a man-made container, and yet the shapes and varieties employed to make even the simplest rectangular box are apparently infinite. This series explores these forms and the simple geometry they possess".
